Urbanism -the city dweller`s way of life-has preoccupied sociology since the turn of the century. People in cities cannot know all their neighbors as intimately as it was possible all their neighbors as intimately as it was possible for them to do in small communities. Urbanites meet one another in highly segmental roles....their
dependence upon others is confined to a highly fractionalized aspect of the other`s round of activity.
